Many Brits are looking forward to holidaying in the Maldive Islands this summer, and why not.
The Commonwealth country spread across the Indian Ocean is an exclusive paradise of eco-lodges and resorts situated on atolls surrounded by turquoise sea and pristine reefs.
Tourism is the main source of income for the roughly half a million Maldivians living on two hundred islands connected by small boats and planes.
And although an Islamic country, holidaymakers can enjoy as much booze and western excess as their budgets allow as long as it’s inside their guarded enclaves.
Guarded from what, you may wonder?
Well, a lesser known fact is the Maldives were amongst the highest per capita in terms of people going to join Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
And the return of these fighters, alongside those who fought against western forces in Afghanistan, presents a concern for the UK.
Currently and despite action from the Maldives government to combat violent militants, UK Counter Terrorism Policing and the Foreign Office advise that a terrorist attack on western tourists cannot be ruled out.
In the advent of an attack, the advice is to RUN to a safe place, HIDE from the assailant and TELL what happened when it’s safe to come out.
The threat of an attack on western tourists in the Maldives and globally has increased in response to the genocidal policies pursued by the far right Israeli government against Palestinians in illegally occupied Gaza, while the West and Arab nations look on.
There is no such inaction by the British government when its comes to combatting the threat from Islamic extremism.
Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism squad (SO15) are regularly dispatched overseas to engage and advise local police forces. It’s a tough gig, but God knows someone’s got to do it.
So what happened when one of its senior officers went to the Maldives?
Well, a local female police officer he took a shine to there had to Run, Hide and then Tell of her traumatic experience at his hands only to have Scotland Yard cover up the matter.
All of which took place while new Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley was all over the airwaves proclaiming himself the agent of change at a force branded institutionally corrupt, racist and misogynist.
Today, SO15’s big swinging dick culture is examined with the help of insiders who didn’t RUN or HIDE, but stood their ground to TELL The Upsetter how it is.
The Maldives scandal gives the lie to Rowley’s ‘clean up’ of the Met and exposes the dark corner that is counter terrorism, where getting away with it - in the name of national security - is the norm.
